Feelings from an island i love

As Nature Awakes – Santorini in the Spring

As winter gives way to the oncoming spring and nature awakes, something magical is happening on the island of Santorini. Just as the fragrant buds begin to bloom, the entire island seems to draw life from the sun and the sea and blossoms, almost in anticipation of warmer, sunnier days. Santorini in the spring is breath-taking; as nature awakes, everything takes on a new meaning; it becomes prettier, fresher and more welcoming.

When one visits Santorini in the springtime, there are certain activities that should not be missed. For starters, hiking or horseback riding in the island’s hinterland, in any of the designated hiking routes is an amazing experience, heightened by the intoxicating fragrances of spring blooms, the striking clarity of the atmosphere and the royal deep blue of the sea in the foreground. The path starting from the village of Pyrgos to Mesa Vouno and the monastery of Prophitis Ilias and then to Ancient Thera or the path from Pyrgos to Megalochori are both perfect for nature-lovers, whereas the scenic route from Fira to Imerovigli and Oia is something no visitor should miss. As an added bonus, spring with its moderate temperatures makes hiking these paths a breeze, as opposed to the sweltering heat of later summer days.

Sightseeing in Santorini in the spring is also intriguing; a hopeful and assuaging sensation of harmony and balance fills your soul at the sight of fresh grass and flowers blossoming side by side with the remains of an ancient civilization, as if new life emerges from the ashes. The crowds visiting popular sites like Ancient Thera and Akrotiri are smaller, making for an even more pleasurable experience.

Gastronomically speaking, spring in Santorini is exciting as well! Some of the most delightful dishes of the Santorinian cuisine are made with fresh springtime vegetables, like the traditional stuffed zucchini blossoms, cherry tomato fritters or eggplant tapenade made with the mouthwatering white eggplants of Santorini.

Even though Santorini is a popular summer destination, spring in Santorini is a magical time to be around, and just as nature awakes, thus Santorini will awaken all your senses.
